Palm Sunday and Holy Week

Palm Sunday and Holy Week

Published: 22nd March, 2024

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, the commemoration of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, and the beginning of Holy Week.  This year as in previous years we offer a very full programme of worship during this week, as we follow the steps of Jesus from His entrance into Jerusalem, acclaimed by the crowds, through the events that followed, leading up to the Last Supper, His betrayal, arrest, trial, passion and death, before celebrating His resurrection at the Easter Vigil and on the morning of Easter Sunday.  All the details can be found below.  I encourage you all to participate in as much as you can.

You will mostly know by now of the serious break-in that happened at St Mary’s last Sunday night.  Whilst I would not wish to downplay the losses that we have suffered, nor the damage that has been done, nor the distress that has been caused, nevertheless I would like you all to know about the huge swell of support that I have felt from the local community and further afield.  There have been so many kind messages, so many offers of support, many donations, and the photographs of the stolen items have been viewed on social media by more than 10,000 people!  This is hugely encouraging.  I am determined that we should not be distracted by this robbery from our purpose, especially at this time, to witness to the saving grace of God revealed uniquely and supremely in Jesus Christ.

Please note the slightly different pattern of services this Sunday:

The addresses during Holy Week will take King David as a focus, reflecting on the ways in which his story points to Jesus’ Passion and Death, and on Jesus’ fulfilment of David’s prophetic hope.

Saturday 30th March ~ Holy Saturday
From 9am Children’s Easter Craft Workshop, in the Chantry House

The Easter Vigil begins in the Chantry House; we then process through the churchyard for the lighting of the Easter fire outside the West doors, before entering church. This is the most intense and, ultimately, joyful service of the Christian year (and also the longest!) – all are encouraged to attend!
