This Sunday we celebrate the feast of Candlemas, officially known as the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. This feast day marks the end of the long Christmas and Epiphany season; although we celebrate the Incarnation of Our Lord at all times, after Candlemas the emphasis shifts from the Incarnation to the Cross, and the Sundays count down to the start of Lent. Sunday’s gospel points in the same direction: Simeon’s words to Mary – “a sword will pierce your own soul, too” – indicate that the triumph and salvation that the infant Christ is to win will come at a high cost.
This Sunday is the start of an experiment at St Mary’s: a trial run of a new monthly afternoon service of All Age Evensong. The shape of the service will be the same as Evensong, but using modern translations for the texts, and guitar-led music. We hope this will appeal to families with young children, but everyone is welcome. The service will be at 4pm, and we plan to continue on the fourth Sunday of the month thereafter. Please come along if you can, and spread the word particularly among any families you may know.
