The Epiphany & The Second Sunday of Epiphany

The Epiphany & The Second Sunday of Epiphany

Published: 10th January, 2023

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany (transferred from Friday 6th). Traditionally in the western Church the Epiphany has chiefly (but not exclusively) been about the visit of the Magi. In the East there is a much greater emphasis on the Baptism of Christ (which is now a feast day of its own in the Church of England’s calendar), and there are fascinating customs involving the retrieval of crosses from often icy waters. The picture above is from Australia, probably one of the more pleasant places to take a dip in January! The story of the Wedding at Cana is another story associated with the Epiphany. All of these stories have in common an element of manifestation or revelation: in each of them, an aspect of the identity and mission of Jesus is revealed.
