This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

Sunday 3rd March – The Third Sunday of Lent

This Sunday we hear the story of Jesus cleansing the Temple, from John’s gospel.  John’s telling of this famous story is quite different to those of the other gospels, both because of where he places the story in Jesus’ ministry – close to the beginning, rather than close to the end – and also because of the famous words “tear down this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up”, which is a prediction of both Jesus’ Passion and Death and also of His Resurrection.  This story is appropriate for the season of Lent both because of the cleansing itself – Lent can be seen as a sort of spiritual spring-cleaning – and also because of its anticipation of the events of Holy Week and Easter, to which we look forward at this time.
