This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

Published: 6th April, 2024

This Sunday we hear the story of Jesus’ Resurrection appearances in John’s gospel: Jesus appears to the disciples who are gathered behind locked doors out of fear.  The contrast between the fear of the disciples, and Jesus’ message of peace, is very striking.  As with Jesus’ encounter with Mary Magdalene, after the initial reassurance His message becomes one of sending and commissioning: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you… Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained”.  The contrast between the fearful disciples and the mission and authority with which Jesus trusts them is extreme!  But perhaps it isn’t so different in the life of the Church today: fear and anxiety remain features of our life together, and yet Jesus entrusts us with His mission.  Let us pray that the Church in our day may know the peace that is His gift.

This week Fr Jeremy will be leading a parish pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.  Please note the reduced pattern of weekday services.
