This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

Published: 8th June, 2024

This Sunday we hear a fascinating passage from the First Book of Samuel, in which the people of Israel ask for a king, and the prophet Samuel warns them of what a king will be like.  It is a passage beloved of the dwindling band of republicans who have any knowledge of the bible!  You could also imagine the words of the prophet Samuel in the mouths of those on the wilder fringes of American libertarianism (as pictured above).  It is possible that this passage is a trace of an ancient historical memory of the transition from an informally-organised society based around kinship groups to a society with something approaching a single centralised authority figure, arguably one of the first steps on the path that eventually led to the modern nation state.  But most of all, this passage reminds us both that all authority belongs ultimately to God, and also that the tendency to oppress and exploit is a constant temptation for those in positions of power.

This Sunday we welcome Simon Moore from the Salvation Army as our guest preacher at the 9.30am Sung Eucharist at St Mary’s.  The collection at this service will go towards the work of the Salvation Army.
