This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

Published: 22nd June, 2024

This Sunday we hear the old Sunday school favourite, the story of David and Goliath.  This ancient story of the triumph of the underdog retains its place in the language of our increasingly secular nation, and is still regularly used to describe an apparently unequal fight.  We live in a time that is (rightly) very uneasy about violence, and one of the difficulties of reading the bible as an ancient text in our contemporary culture is working out what to do with all the violence.  We might be tempted to say that violence is a particular problem with the Old Testament; but then consider the place of the Cross in the New Testament, and think too of the military imagery that can be found in St Paul’s letters.  We who have for the most part been blessed to live through comparatively peaceful times need to be careful about making easy judgements about the past.  We can also acknowledge that stories such as that of David and Goliath do need to be handled with very great care.  And we can recognise too in these violent stories a metaphor for the struggle of Christian life: our struggle, as St Paul writes, is not against flesh and blood but against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, and we must fight the good fight against the forces of sin and selfishness that rear up in every human heart.
