This Sunday and the week ahead at St Mary’s

Sunday 25th February ~ The Second Sunday of Lent

This Sunday we hear the story of God’s promise to Abraham (pictured above at the 3rd century Dura Europos Synagogue, Syria), and St Paul’s analysis of the story in his Epistle to the Romans.  St Paul is concerned to point out to Christians in Rome that the promise was made to Abraham before the giving of the law, and before Abraham had accepted circumcision.  During the season of Lent, we can sometimes get sucked into thinking that we have to earn our way into God’s good books by trying very hard and giving things up and going to church regularly.  Now there is nothing wrong with trying hard or giving things up or going to church regularly, but the point is that we do not do this to get on God’s good side: God accepts us by His grace, not by our good works.  The flip side of this is that we do not have to despair when we slip up.  Such good as we manage to do is our loving response, inspired by Jesus’ example and empowered by the Holy Spirit, to God’s gracious acceptance of us.
