This week at St Mary’s

This week at St Mary’s

Published: 17th February, 2024

On the First Sunday of Lent by long tradition we hear the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness.  This year we hear the account from the Gospel according to St Mark, which does not feature the familiar details from Matthew and Luke’s versions.  Mark’s account is characteristically brief and hurried; we jump from Jesus’ baptism to His temptation to the beginning of His preaching ministry in a matter of a few short sentences.  Including no details of the nature of Jesus’ temptations, Mark’s account encourages us to reflect rather on the fact of His being tempted at all.  We are reminded that Jesus is fully human, that He shares our weaknesses, and we are comforted in knowing that when we ourselves suffer temptation, He understands what we feel.  We are encouraged by the possibility of triumph over temptation.  And we are reassured that temptation itself is not sin, knowing that our sinless Lord has suffered it Himself.

This Sunday our services includes the Civic Service at 4pm, which this year will take the form of Choral Evensong.  Please do come along to prayer for the Mayor and Town Council.  Refreshments will be offered afterwards, with savoury snacks provided by the Mayor and Town Council.
