This week at St Mary’s

Published: 15th April, 2023

This Sunday we hear the story of Jesus’ Resurrection appearances to the apostles in John’s gospel. John’s gospel is often very specific about timings: the appearance to the apostles minus Thomas is described as happening on the evening of the first day of the week, in other words the evening of Easter Sunday. The appearance to the apostles with Thomas is described as happening a week later, in other words on this very Sunday. Some scholars see this as early evidence for the Christian practice of meeting for worship on Sundays, rather than on Saturdays as was (and is) Jewish practice. Although St Thomas is remembered chiefly, at least in western Christian tradition, for his doubts, it is Thomas who exclaims to Jesus “My Lord and my God!”, providing the climactic recognition of Jesus’ divinity that was very likely the original ending of the gospel.

This Sunday services continue at the usual times, but at St Mary’s the choir are taking a well-earned Sunday off:
