Sunday 14th May ~ The Sixth Sunday of Easter
Dear friends,
This Sunday is known in the old calendar as Rogation Sunday, an important day in the agricultural cycle of the Church’s calendar. Our urbanised and technologically-driven society is ever-more disconnected from the rhythms of agriculture, and the seasonal patterns of the natural world that drive them, and it seems to me to be a pity that the Church has, perhaps unwittingly, colluded in this disconnection by downplaying festivals associated with the agricultural year in the church’s calendar. Our contemporary response to the growing environmental crisis is focussed on yet more technology and yet more disconnection from the natural world; my feeling is that we also urgently need to learn from the practices of previous generations, and to foster a deeper spiritual appreciation for the ways in which God provides for us through Creation. So this Sunday we will pray for God’s blessing on our crops and livestock, and on the farmers who look after them.
