Trinity Sunday – 4th June 2023
This image above shows a page from the eighth century Latin Gellone Sacramentary, specifically the page of the proper preface for what we know today as Trinity Sunday. Deciphering the text isn’t easy, especially when you know as little Latin as I do. And yet it is possible, if you look at the bottom left hand corner, to discern words that look at least something like: non in unius singularitate personæ, sed in unius Trinitate substantiæ, Quod enim de tua gloria, revelante te, credimus, hoc de Filio tuo, hoc de Spiritu Sancto, sine discretione sentimus. We find the same meaning, expressed in Cranmerian English, in our own Book of Common Prayer: not one only Person, but three Persons in one Substance. For that which we believe of the glory of the Father, the same we believe of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, without any difference or inequality. On Trinity Sunday it is easy for us to get bogged down in technical theological discussions. But reflecting on these ancient liturgical texts, cherished and handed down by the church through the centuries, we see that worship is the true starting point for seeking to understand the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. It is through worship that we learn the humility to accept God’s self-revelation as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
