Week beginning Sunday 16th July – The Sixth Sunday after Trinity

This Sunday we hear the first of the Jacob and Esau stories.  It’s fair to say that the twin brothers have a complex relationship, and again we see that despite the huge difference in social and cultural context between the Old Testament and our own time, there are elements of this story with which we can readily identify: sibling rivalry and conflict is sadly a universal human theme.  Esau comes back to the tents after a day of hunting, and he is so hungry that he agrees to sell his birth right as first born to his younger twin for a bowl of lentil soup.  It is a story that doesn’t reveal either of its principal characters in a positive light, but it does have helpful things to say to us, not least the importance of delayed gratification!  The idea of reversal is also significant, and points us to Jesus’ teaching: “The first will be last, and the last, first”.
